What a POS Installation Includes
A typical station install covers terminal mounting (counter, pole, wall or arm), the cash drawer and its interface, receipt printer, barcode scanner, customer-facing display, the payment device and its tether or dock, and the cabling and power that serve all of it. Restaurants add kitchen printers, kitchen display screens, expo and pass stations, and often bar and patio stations with their own environmental considerations.
We also handle the practical details that determine whether a station is workable eight hours into a shift: cable dressed so the drawer opens fully, mounts positioned for the operator's reach and sight line, payment terminals placed within the customer's reach at the correct height, and cabling concealed so a mop handle cannot rip a printer off the counter.
Network and Cabling for POS
POS reliability starts with a dedicated wired drop per station wherever it is physically possible. We run Cat6 or Cat6A from the IDF or back-office rack to each terminal, kitchen printer, KDS and access point, terminate to a patch panel, and test and certify every run. PoE-powered devices are landed on managed PoE switches sized with headroom rather than a five-port switch hidden behind the register.
Segmentation matters for both stability and payment security. We build the cabling and switch infrastructure so payment devices, POS terminals, back-office systems and guest Wi-Fi can live on separate VLANs, which supports PCI DSS scope reduction and keeps a customer streaming video off the same broadcast domain as your card readers. Our structured cabling and network and Wi-Fi practices handle that layer as part of the same project.
Multi-Site Rollout Programs
For chains and franchise groups we run POS deployments as programs: one project manager, a standard site kit, a build book so every location is installed identically, a per-store wave schedule and store-level completion reporting. We staff waves from local crews in each market, which is what makes a 300-store rollout finish on schedule instead of stalling in the last twenty markets.
Standardization is the point. When every store's rack, patch panel, switch, station numbering and cable labeling look the same, your support desk can troubleshoot by phone instead of dispatching, and your next refresh is a repeatable job rather than 300 unique archaeology projects.
After-Hours Cutovers, Not Lost Selling Hours
Retail and restaurant installations happen when the store is closed. Our standard model is an overnight cutover: crew arrives after close, the new infrastructure is installed and tested, stations are swapped, test transactions are run, and the store opens on the new system at its normal time with the old hardware boxed and labeled for return or disposition.
Where a full overnight is not feasible — a 24-hour location, an airport concession, a hospital cafeteria — we phase station by station, keeping a working register live at all times. Either way the deliverable is the same: no lost selling hours, and no manager arriving at 5 a.m. to find a half-installed counter.
Staging and Configuration Coordination
Most POS platforms are configured centrally by the vendor or your IT team, and hardware often arrives pre-imaged. We coordinate to that model: receiving and inventorying equipment before install day, confirming serial numbers and device assignments against the store list, staging kits per site, and flagging shortages early enough that they can be corrected before a crew is standing in a closed store missing two printers.
Where the vendor performs remote configuration during the cutover window, we work alongside them live — bringing devices online in the sequence they need, confirming each one reaches the platform, and troubleshooting the physical layer immediately instead of scheduling a second visit.
Testing Before Handoff
A station is not done when it powers on. Before we leave we run test transactions on every terminal, confirm receipt printers produce output and kitchen printers route to the correct station, verify KDS screens receive the right orders, test the payment device end to end including a test authorization where your processor allows it, confirm the cash drawer opens on command, and check scanners and scales read correctly.
We also verify the boring things that cause week-two tickets: every device is on the intended network segment, PoE budgets are within limits, cable runs are certified and labeled, and the rack is documented. The store manager gets a short walkthrough of what was installed and where the infrastructure lives, and you get an as-built record per site.
Refreshes, Expansions and Platform Migrations
Migrating from one POS platform to another, or refreshing aging hardware across a fleet of stores, is routine work for us. We survey the existing infrastructure, identify which cabling and switching can be reused and which cannot, install what is missing, cut over after hours, and package legacy hardware for return, trade-in or disposal.
Migrations are usually where hidden infrastructure debt surfaces: uncertified cable runs from a 2011 remodel, daisy-chained switches under the counter, a single drop split three ways with a passive splitter. We report what we find with photos before we touch it, so you make the call on whether to fix the root cause during the cutover or schedule it separately.
What Drives POS Installation Pricing
Per-site pricing is driven by station count, how many new cable drops are required versus reusing existing certified runs, the amount of network equipment being installed, ceiling and wall construction, whether work is after hours, and travel to the market. Restaurants generally cost more than retail at the same station count because of kitchen printers, KDS placement and hostile environments like grease, heat and washdown areas.
New cabling is the biggest variable. A store with clean, tested, correctly located drops installs quickly; a store that needs six new runs through a hard-lid ceiling does not. For chain programs we quote a blended per-store rate against a defined site kit, with a survey allowance for outliers, so your finance team gets one predictable number.
