ELD Compliance and Why the Install Matters
Under the FMCSA ELD rule in 49 CFR Part 395, most commercial drivers required to keep records of duty status must use a registered electronic logging device connected to the engine so it automatically captures engine power status, motion, miles driven and engine hours. A device that is not properly connected to the vehicle's data bus cannot capture that data, which is a compliance exposure regardless of what the dashboard shows.
Our installs are done to that standard: a real connection to the diagnostic port or a proper J1939 harness on heavy-duty units, secured so it cannot be casually unplugged, with engine data confirmed reporting before sign-off. We verify that the vehicle is producing odometer and engine-hour data in the platform, not just a GPS dot on a map, because the GPS dot is the part that works even when the compliance-critical connection does not.
Vehicle Gateway Installation
The vehicle gateway is the backbone of a Motive deployment, providing GPS, engine diagnostics and the hours-of-service data path. On light-duty vans and pickups we connect at the OBD-II port; on Class 7 and Class 8 tractors we typically use a nine-pin J1939 connection; and where the port is occupied, inaccessible or exposed to tampering, we install an extension or hardwired harness and mount the gateway out of reach.
Every gateway is physically mounted rather than left hanging off a cable, with the run routed behind trim, secured away from pedals and steering shafts, loomed where it crosses metal edges, and left with a service loop so a future swap does not require cutting the harness. Installs on trucks that carry a second device — a legacy ELD, a customer-mandated tracker, a toll transponder — are planned so both units keep working instead of fighting for the same port.
AI Dashcam Placement
Dashcams are mounted high and centered behind the mirror in line with FMCSA's windshield-obstruction rule in 49 CFR 393.60, which permits vehicle safety technology mounted not more than roughly 8.5 inches below the upper edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers, or 7 inches above its lower edge — inside the swept zone, near its top or bottom — and always outside the driver's sight lines to the road, signs and signals. That placement keeps the camera legal at inspection and gives the road-facing lens the correct horizon.
Framing is then verified from the seated driver position on that specific truck, because cab height, windshield rake and hood length change the view dramatically between a day cab, a sleeper and a straight truck. For dual-facing units we also confirm the in-cab lens covers the driver position without pointing at the passenger seat or the ceiling. Cable runs behind the headliner and A-pillar trim, clear of airbag deployment paths, with no visible cable draped across the glass.
Driver App Pairing and Handover
An ELD deployment is not finished when the hardware is in — it is finished when the driver can actually log in. Where your rollout plan calls for it, we verify that the gateway pairs with the Motive driver app over Bluetooth from inside the cab, so you learn about a pairing problem in the yard instead of at a truck stop at 11 p.m.
We also leave the cab in a state a driver can work with: mount positions that do not block controls or vents, cable that does not swing into the driver's line of sight, and nothing left on the seat or floor. Where fleets want it, we provide a short in-cab orientation at handover covering where the device is, how to confirm it is connected, and who to call if it is not.
Trailers, Assets and Mixed Fleets
Unpowered trailers, containers and equipment take battery- or solar-powered asset gateways rather than wired devices. We mount them for clear sky view and physical survival — trailer nose above the bulkhead, protected upper rail positions, sheltered points on generators and yellow iron — away from forklift paths, straps, dunnage and wash-bay spray.
Many fleets run Motive in the trucks and something else in a legacy division or an acquired company. We install across all of them, so a mixed-platform fleet gets one installation vendor, one schedule and one workmanship standard rather than three separate vendor rollouts competing for the same equipment.
Terminal Rollouts and Scheduling
Multi-terminal deployments run as managed programs: one project manager, per-terminal waves with firm dates and vehicle lists, local crews in each market and VIN-level completion tracking. For trucking fleets we build the schedule around dispatch reality — overnight and weekend shifts, early-morning waves before drivers pull out, batch installs during a driver's 34-hour reset, or rolling batches of five to ten units a day.
Typical install time is 45 to 90 minutes per vehicle: about 30 to 45 minutes for a gateway plus road-facing camera on a light-duty unit, and 60 to 90 minutes for a tractor with a dual-facing dashcam and concealed routing. A two-technician crew usually completes 8 to 14 vehicles per day at one terminal, so a 150-truck fleet across four terminals is normally finished in three to four weeks.
Verification and Documentation
A truck is complete only when the gateway is online in your Motive account under the correct VIN, GPS and cellular are confirmed, engine data including odometer and engine hours is reporting, camera framing is validated from the driver's seat, and — where applicable — app pairing has been demonstrated in the cab.
Each vehicle is documented with VIN, device serial, install type, accessories, date and technician. That record is what lets a safety director reconcile the fleet roster against installed units, close out unassigned devices, and answer an audit question about when a specific tractor was fitted without calling three people.
What Drives Installation Pricing
Motive installation is priced per vehicle, driven by four factors: the hardware set (gateway alone versus gateway plus dual-facing dashcam), vehicle class and how difficult the cab is to route, how many trucks are staged at one terminal, and travel to remote or low-count yards.
Volume at a single site is the dominant lever because mobilization is the fixed cost — thirty tractors at one terminal costs far less per unit than six at five sites. National programs are quoted as a program with a blended per-vehicle rate and a defined wave schedule, so you budget one number rather than absorbing a stream of service invoices.
